If you’ve had a chance to read the first chapter of Completely His, or watched our 8-minute DVD about what prompted me to write the Loving Jesus Without Limits series, you know that I was involved in a tragic car accident when I was sixteen years old. That accident left Marjorie Jarstfer dead, and her husband of 28 years, Gary, a widower. Gary could have pressed charges for involuntary manslaughter and sued our family for more money than our insurance company covered. But instead of blaming me, Gary chose to bless me. He lovingly assured me of his forgiveness, and challenged me to “love Jesus without limits” the way Marjorie did. Over the past 23 years, Gary and his second wife, Betty Ann, have basically adopted me as their spiritual daughter. I’m close to several of their children and grandchildren, and introducing Gary and Betty Ann around at the convention last week made many jaws drop and eyes well up with tears when they figured out who he was and why he was there. Over and over, we shared “our story” of how God brought us together through such traumatic circumstances, yet because Gary chose to bless rather than blame, we’ve become one big tightly-knit spiritual family. As Gary and I parted at the close of the convention, he whispered in my ear, “Goodbye, daughter!” Although I’ll never be glad that I accidentally killed Marjorie, I am so thankful to have Gary’s unconditional love and encouraging support in my life. In fact, I have come to view God in much the same way as I view Gary – as a compassionate cheerleader whose extravagant mercies free me from my boatload of guilt and shame and prompt me to live a life filled with spiritual passion and purpose. You may or may not have a “Gary” in your life – a strong father-figure whose love for you lifts your spirits from day to day. But do you know that God has adopted you as His spiritual daughter? Ephesians 1:5 tells us, “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.” Did you get the last part of that scripture? It gave Him great pleasure to adopt you as His own! Do you take great pleasure in belonging completely to Him? Do you know you can’t do anything bad enough to make Him turn his back on you? Do you know that He is forever cheering you on? Do you sense Him encouraging you become all that He has created you to be? Your earthly father may not have shown you all the love that you deserve, but I assure you that our Heavenly Father’s love will never disappoint. We continue to experience a tremendous burden for the youth of Zimbabwe after our two-week mission trip this past September. At the invitation of Youth for Christ, we traveled to 16 different high schools, churches, and orphanages and spoke to over 6,000 teen girls and boys. Many approached with tears in their eyes saying, “Both my parents have already died of AIDS, and I assumed my life would end the same way.
